MY STORY SO FAR
Growing up in the vibrant nation that is Zimbabwe was an incredibly formative experience for me which has shaped who I am today. The Zimbabwean culture is a tapestry of diverse traditions, languages, and customs. From the vibrant rhythms of traditional music and dance to the colorful celebrations of cultural festivals, I was exposed to a rich tapestry of traditions that celebrated our unique identities while highlighting our shared humanity. The country, with its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, provided a backdrop for a childhood filled with love, discovery, resilience, cultural pride, and a deep appreciation for a strong sense of togetherness and communal values.

Throughout my life, I was immersed in the philosophy of Hunhu/Ubuntu, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of communal harmony, that our actions should be guided by empathy, compassion, and mutual respect. Hunhu/Ubuntu, which translates to “I am because we are, since we are, therefore I am” (John Mbiti) which encapsulates the belief that our humanity is defined by our relationships with others for “I cannot be fully me if you are not fully who you are destined to be. I AM because WE ARE” (Nobantu Mpotulo). This philosophy became an integral part of my upbringing. It shaped my values, nurtured my curiosity, and instilled a passion for social justice and equitable change. I am a passionate advocate of living the philosophy of Hunhu/Ubuntu and I strive to embody the values and principles that this philosophy embodies. I am deeply committed to promoting social justice, equality, and inclusivity in all aspects of society. I believe that by recognizing and honoring the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, we can foster a world that is more compassionate, equitable, and harmonious.

However, growing up in Zimbabwe also presented its fair share of challenges. Economic fluctuations and political instability shaped the landscape and quality of everyday life. These experiences instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, adaptability, and a drive to lead and foster positive, transformative and sustainable change.

Education played a pivotal role in my upbringing. Despite resource limitations, Zimbabweans hold a deep reverence for knowledge and the power it possesses to transform lives. I was fortunate to have access to education at prestigious institutions, which opened doors of opportunity and nurtured my thirst for life-long learning and personal growth.

It is these experiences that continue to drive me as I navigate the world, seeking to make a positive impact and celebrate the beauty of humanity in all its forms. My journey so far has led me to explore various avenues. Whether it be through my work as an advocate, educator, researcher or community engagement practitioner, I am dedicated to empowering individuals, promoting dialogue, and building bridges across diverse communities. Beyond my professional pursuits, I'm also a firm believer in personal growth and wellness. I value the importance of integrity and humility. I aim to inspire others to embrace the spirit of Hunhu/Ubuntu and join me in creating a world where everyone's voice is heard, and every person is valued. Together, let us cultivate a society that celebrates our shared humanity and uplifts those in need as we live a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life.

In the spirit of Hunhu/Ubuntu,
My name is Mapfumo Chidzonga.
